Dogwood Ceramic Supply Announcement
August 20, 2008 |
American Quality Bisque
Dogwood Ceramic Supply is pleased to announce the addition of
American Quality Bisque to our product
line. American Quality Bisque is
manufactured in the United States exclusively for Dogwood Ceramic Supply
using only the finest casting slips and moist clays so as to be compatible
with Duncan and Spectrum glazes and underglazes. Because of the high volume
which American Quality Bisque is
produced, the prices are competitive with imported bisque and Dogwood
Ceramic Supply can rapidly acquire additional products without having to
wait for the container to float over the ocean. |
| The American Quality Bisque
product line will consist of classic and popular earthenware bisque
shapes with a touch of Coastal Mississippi themes to support the
classroom, recreation programs as well as production and Paint Your Own
Pottery Studios. | | |
|
The Ohr-Pot, made specifically for the
Ohr-O'Keefe Museum of Art Clay Outreach
program is good example of what we can
expect from American Quality Bisque.
The price of the 6" bisque vase with the hand thrown appearance is
low enough the Museum can afford to offer the Ohr-Pot program to
schools for only $5 per child (bisque + color + firing) and
American Quality Bisque has
already committed to providing up to 10,000 Ohr-Pots per year for
the Museum. A winning combination all
around. |
|
| | |
| Additional information regarding
American Quality Bisque will be
released over the next few weeks. |

The Duncan® Research & Development department
leads the industry in non-toxic fired product technology. The
introduction of the Envision® Glaze line 15 years ago was a testament to
the social and environmental responsibility demonstrated by Duncan®
Ceramic Arts.
Since then, many other manufacturers of fired ceramic products have
followed the example set by Duncan® to make our industry safer for our
customers and employees.
Pure Brilliance Clear Glaze has pushed non-toxic fired product
technology to an even newer level with attributes you normally would
only experience from a product that contained lead.
This is why Duncan® Pure Brilliance Clear Glaze truly is
The FIRST High Performance Non-Toxic Clear Glaze!
We have performed extensive testing on Pure
Brilliance for many reasons including, safety, performance and ease of
use. Performance testing has taken place over all Duncan® underglaze
colors, all competitive underglaze colors from many manufacturers, a
variety of bisque from all over the world and multiple clay formulas, to
ensure that performance is optimum even for those who prefer to cast
their own ware.

Dogwood Ceramic Supply Announcement |
| August 20, 2008 |
|
Dogwood Ceramic Supply
will no longer be carrying Seeley's products. |
|

|
Dogwood Ceramic Supply has been a loyal distributor of Seeley's
for many years and has been a hub for both porcelain as well as a stoneware
slip, often purchasing complete truck loads (2880 gallons) of slips several
times per year. Because of our years of association and volume of
business with Seeley's we have been quite aware of the problems in acquiring
products from Seeley's in a timely manner. Specifically we experienced
repeated episodes of product shortages or lengthy delays in releasing
products for shipping to Dogwood. At various times we had to stack
orders, having an order in the plant weeks or even months before a prior
order even had a chance to ship. If was difficult and costly to
operate our business in such a manner, but we did it because Seeley's simply
made the best products on the market.
When Hurricane Katrina hit, the region took a major hit, with
Dogwood Ceramic Supply losing many high volume customers. After
Katrina Seeley's continued to support Dogwood even though our purchasing
volume took a substantial nosedive.
But even with our smaller purchasing volume, Seeley's inconsistent
manufacturing and shipping times remained.
Fast-forward to June 10, 2008. Dogwood Ceramic Supply
placed an order for a single pallet of porcelain slip. Not a
big order or difficult order to handle. At the time the order was
placed we were told 4-6 weeks before the product could be shipped.
Typical Seeley's. On July 1st, Dogwood was told by the production
manager at Seeley's that our order would ship from the plant at the
beginning of the following week. The order did not ship the following
week. On July 18th the owner of Seeley's called Dogwood in response to
our repeated inquiries with a promise of information the following day.
No information was received the following day. The week of July 21st
had more telephone inquiries and even more telephone calls returned by
several different Seeley's employees with promises of firm information
"tomorrow". On July 25th Dogwood Ceramic Supply gave Seeley's an
ultimatum, either provide a firm shipping date or cancel the order. No
shipping date was provided and Dogwood Ceramic Supply cancelled the order. |
|
|
| In hindsight this problem should have never occurred,
in October 2006 Seeley's substantially reduced their product offerings
specifically so that prompt turnaround of products could be achieved.
Nearly two years later that promise had still not come to fruition.
Dogwood's customers blame Dogwood, we in turn can only blame Seeley's. |
| |
| What will happen now? The single biggest issue is
finding a good quality porcelain slip that can be obtained with minimal
fuss. Standard Ceramic Supply, the manufacturer of Standard Clays,
has been expanding their slip production to include English Porcelain
Slip. Standard's English Porcelain Slip is a tight, vitreous slip
based upon classic English porcelain slips, much like Seeley's porcelain
slips. And surprisingly (or not so surprisingly), Standard could
ship samples to Dogwood within 3 days of our order. Dogwood
Ceramic Supply has been distributing samples of Standard's English
Porcelain Slip to our key customers. Feedback so far has been
excellent. The down side to Standard's English Porcelain Slip is
the product is only available in white, but since most Dogwood customers
cast in white slip we don't foresee this issue to be much of a problem.
At this point we anticipate bulk quantities of Standard's English
Porcelain Slip to be available at Dogwood Ceramic Supply for sale to the
public in early September.
With regards to other products sold by Seeley's, many of
those products have been replaced by competing brands or will be
eliminated all together. Obviously Standard's Stoneware Slip is a
direct substitute for Seeley's Stoneware Slip, and in fact Dogwood
Ceramic Supply made the decision to drop Seeley's Stoneware Slip several
months ago. The limited range of china paints and doll related
products carried by Dogwood Ceramic Supply can be acquired from other
sources and we have already eliminated these products from our showroom.
Seeley's Soft-Fired Stoneware Bisque is a bit more difficult
product to replace or eliminate. At the present time we are
working with another manufacturer so that we can continue to offer
Soft-Fired Stoneware Bisque to our customers.
Seeley's Stoneware Clays are in limited supply at Dogwood Ceramic
Supply and will be eliminated from our product offerings when the
inventory levels are depleted. |
| |
| And before anybody asks... Dogwood Ceramic Supply does
not have any Seeley's Porcelain Slip in stock. NONE. Don't
ask, don't beg and don't whine because it will not do any good as
Dogwood Ceramic Supply does not have any Seeley's Porcelain Slip in
stock. |
George Ohr Museum Announcement |
|
As first reported on WLOX, Marjie Gowdy, the director of the
Ohr-O'Keefe Museum of Art for the past 16 years is leaving her
position with the museum on August 22nd. Marjie has overseen
the growth of the Ohr Museum from the little art museum that was
nothing more than a satellite of the Mississippi Museum of Art, to
the Frank Gehery inspired multimillion dollar museum to showcase the
works of Biloxi's favorite son and world famous potter. We wish
Marjie well, and hope she will return to Biloxi to visit the Museum
when the first major buildings will be completed in 2010. |

Announcement | |
Dated July 31, 2008, received August 11, 2008 |
Another Price Adjustment for 2008
" We find ourselves in unprecedented times. The market is
in a relative depression and commercial activity is slowing. Yet, in
the face of lower demand, commodity and transportation prices are reaching
new highs almost daily. With oil and natural gas remaining at historic
levels and prices for raw materials used in manufacturing Refractories and
Frits have again recently increased, including impacts on exchange rates.
As a result, Dal Tile will be increasing prices on manufactured Refractory
products an average of 10% and on Frit Products an average of 20%. The
increases will be effective September 01, 2008. " |
| | | Dogwood Ceramic Supply comment: | |
As previously reported by Dogwood
Ceramic Supply, Dal Tile announced a modest 5% price increase across all
product lines effective January 01, 2008, followed by a much larger 12%
increase effective March 11th on 6x6 tile and nearly 40% increase on 4x4
tile. It is becoming obvious to us that low cost products are being
severely impacted by rising freight and fuel costs as these costs are a
large percentage of the total product costs.
Dogwood Ceramic Supply will adjust tile prices effective October 1, 2008 |
| |
Dogwood Ceramic Supply Announcement |
|
|
Please refer to Fuel Surcharge for current
rates and additional information. Current rates
are published. Due to the recent declines in the world wide price of
oil there have been slight decreases in the fuel surcharges.
|
|
|
|
With regards to clay prices... Dogwood Ceramic Supply made a
freight and fuel adjustment on clay at the beginning of April in response to
rising fuel prices. The fuel prices at the beginning of July were
nearly high enough to trigger a second increase for 2008. However,
after reaching a peak in mid-July, fuel prices have steadily fallen.
To answer the question that is on everybody's mind, fuel prices will need to
drop to March 2008 levels for the price of clay to decrease. |

| Always remember, planning ahead and combining
several shipments into one can have a positive impact upon one's
business. |

Paragon Industries has released a ceramic fiber lid / top that
is optional on most Paragon firebrick glass kilns. The ceramic fiber
lid on top-loading kilns includes a stainless steel cover to protect
the lid. The heating elements are threaded through a pinless element
groove in the ceramic fiber. The key advantages of the ceramic
fiber lid is two fold. First and foremost the ceramic fiber
material is lighter weight than traditional Insulating Fire Brick
(IFB) allowing a wider range of customers to easily handle the
traditionally heavy kiln lid. Secondly the ceramic fiber
material does not dust or slough small brick particles like IFB
which prevents brick contamination of critical glass works.
The optional fiber top has been added to the Fusion
7,
8 and
10,
Pearl-18,
Pearl-22, GL-18,
GL-22 and GL-24.
The ceramic fiber on the right is shown on the GL-24 |

SPECTRUM Newsletter
| |
WE ARE GOING 100% LEAD-FREE |
| "You have all, no doubt, seen the huge media
coverage of lead paints on toys, etc. This has resulted in a bill before
the US Congress calling for a reduction in the total lead content to 40
ppm of products sold to children (i.e. schools). In as much as our major
ingredient, frit, comes in at 20 to 100 ppm, this will be a very
difficult target to achieve. |
| To give ourselves the best
possible chance of reaching this goal we have decided to eliminate all
possible sources of lead contamination in our production processes which
means stopping the production of all lead-based glazes. This will affect
our Raku line most with the reformulation of 4 colors. It will also
eliminate 2 low-fire metallics (144 & 145) and 2 high-fire metallics
(1189 &1190). We are also working on an inexpensive, easy-to-use clear
glaze to replace the lead-based 100 Clear
ALL 2 OZ. SIZES WILL SWITCH TO THE “PEN” PACKAGE
Effective
immediately all of our products that used to be packaged in 2 ounce squeeze
bottles will now be put into the 2 ounce soft-sided Pen package that we use
for our SuperWriters, RAC Pens and Multipens. This will include the entire
400 series plus the 500 and 600 series. However, conversion of the 600
series will be delayed a few months.
We have made this change because of the great
response we have had to this pen. It is very easy to use and works
beautifully for decorating even without a metal tip. It also has a much more
effective seal than the 2 oz cylinders which have been prone to drying out.
Although the pen is somewhat more expensive the added customer appeal and
functionality make it well worth the added cost.

Hurricane Katrina

The spirit of Mississippi may have been stressed,
but it was never broken
Hurricane Katrina | | |
While we remember the past
through pictures and memorials, we must also move forward. The
Mississippi Gulf Coast is rebuilding and hopefully even growing larger and
stronger. New restaurants are opening almost daily,
shopping malls are being planned and new apartment and home starts are
leading the nation. On the clay side of the world Dogwood Ceramic
Supply is expanding our products and services and there are a
number of pottery and ceramic studios that are opening along the
Gulf Coast. Maybe there really is a silver lining in
every dark cloud. |
